Superintendent Ken Sampson is pleased to announce that Josh Gatner, a junior high teacher at St. Catherine School in Picture Butte, has been selected as Holy Spirit Catholic School Division’s recipient for the Council of Catholic School Superintendents of Alberta’s (CCSSA), “Excellence in Catholic Education Award” for 2019/2020. The award recognizes Catholic educators in Alberta who “are passionate about Catholic education and the students they teach, inspire their students, and demonstrate commitment to Catholic education and teaching excellence.”

Mr. Gatner has served the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division for nearly 14 years, teaching junior high students at St. Joseph School in Coaldale and St. Catherine School in Picture Butte. As an educator he is known to engage his students in creative teaching methods, encouraging them to exceed their own expectations. As a Catholic role model, Mr. Gatner freely shares his gifts with his students, colleagues and the community. He volunteers in the school as a badminton coach and organizes the yearly Grade 9 Farewell celebration. He is a talented musician, participating in St. Martha Parish’s music ministry, plus school Masses and celebrations. He regularly brings students to Piyami Lodge where they interact with seniors throughout the year, developing relationships, benefitting both.

Superintendent Ken Sampson notes, “We are especially proud of the work Josh is doing both in and out of the classroom. His commitment to support Catholic Education throughout our entire community is unwavering.”

“Josh is a well-respected member of the St. Catherine staff,” says Principal Greg Noyes. “His caring attitude, sense of humour, and attention to his vocation as a Catholic educator serve as a model to students and staff. Josh searches to find the face of Jesus in all who he encounters.”

On learning that he was the recipient for this award, Mr. Gatner responded that he certainly felt humbled to be in the company of those who had received it in the past. “More than anything, I feel like everything that I’ve done is more due to the community of people I’ve got around me. I’ve had different, amazing mentors that have always supported me in what I’ve wanted to do. We really couldn’t do this job without that kind of support.”

Mr. Gatner will be honoured at the ACSTA’s SPICE Conference, which will be held April 23-26, 2020. Please join the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division in congratulating Josh Gatner for being selected as our recipient of the “Excellence in Catholic Education Award.”
