Superintendent Ken Sampson is delighted to announce that Ms. Karen Schmidt, principal at St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek, has been selected as Holy Spirit Catholic School Division’s recipient for the Council of Catholic School Superintendents of Alberta’s (CCSSA), “Excellence in Catholic Education Award” for 2020/2021. The award recognizes Catholic educators in Alberta who “are passionate about Catholic education and the students they teach, inspire their students, and demonstrate commitment to Catholic education and teaching excellence.”

Karen has been a part of the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division for 15 of her 24 years in education. The past four years have seen her return to the same school from which she graduated, serving as an administrator at St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek. Throughout her career, Karen has demonstrated strong skills in Catholic leadership by enthusiastically bringing her Faith to life for her staff and students. She continually builds genuine relationships and she tirelessly models the importance of sharing one’s God-given gifts through her work in the school and the parish, where she volunteers in both Parish Council and Music Ministry.

Notes Superintendent Ken Sampson, “We are absolutely thrilled to nominate Karen for this very special award. With an unwavering commitment to Catholic Education, Karen lives her faith each and every day, seeing the face of Christ in everyone she meets. We are so privileged to have her leading our St. Michael School community in Pincher Creek.”

On learning that she was the recipient for this award, Ms. Schmidt responded that she felt both humbled and overwhelmed.

“In my life I’ve always tried to follow my mother’s advice,” states Schmidt. “She was a former teacher with Holy Spirit and she set a strong foundation for my Catholic teaching and leadership with her saying, ‘Wherever you go, go with all your heart.’ So I always try to make my mark everyday and to bring joy wherever I am. I know that God will do the rest - that Catholic education is really His work - and that I just need to bring my whole heart to the students and the community I serve.”

Mrs. Schmidt will be honoured at the ACSTA’s upcoming combined SPICE & Blueprints Conferences, which will be held online on April 29-30, 2021. Please join the Holy Spirit Catholic School Division in congratulating Karen Schmidt for being selected as our recipient of the “Excellence in Catholic Education Award.”
